THE THIRD SKIN
According to Le Corbusier, the architectural master of the 20th Century, our homes are machines for living.
Yes – they are – but they are also our third skin.
As a third skin they need to be able to adapt to our needs like a glove, like a good watch or … a smooth gear change.
Our third skin should deliver convenience, well-being, functionality, considered aesthetics, harmony, clear concepts, unique sensations and positive experiences.
Our third skin should evolve with our needs and adapt itself to our current requirements.
Our homes reflect the passing periods of our lives and each of these is of equal importance and unrepeatable.
To cook: to care and eat.
To bathe: to sense and relax.
To eat: to enjoy and smell.
To work: to concentrate and experiment.
To sleep: to be intimate, soft, calm and safe.
Sun: life, energy and relaxation.
To read: to be reflective, intimate, full of feeling.
During these days of confinement we have the opportunity to step back and realize changes we might need to bring about, which could be small or large: a restyling, an upgraded bathroom, new textiles or lighting.
Two years ago I designed the interior of our home.
It was a complete reform, very necessary and highly thought through. But even so, in these times so intensely at home, I have been able to note a few enhancements that could be put in place and that would improve things even further:
- Hall or Access Area: 2 large zinc vases – to be found in antique shops
- Guest Room: 4 large glass vases – to be found in Luzzio BCN
- Lounge: 2 tables, croquis style – iron and marble
- Office: Vescom Wallpaper on the front wall, Gaston and Daniela cushions and a Nani Marquina carpet
I´m re-imagining the home – and how interior design can reflect my third skin.
Interior Design should accommodate our requirements – as much functional as personal, aesthetic and sensory.
Welcome to the world of well-being – and be conscious of it.
Do not see it as elitist – it may have been so in the past, but all that has changed.
We all deserve to live in the best possible environment suited to our current needs.
To have our third skin!
